When can you officially retire in the US?
If you do not yet know your exact retirement date, the Social Security full retirement age (FRA) is the natural anchor. For anyone born in 1960 or later, FRA is 67. Earlier birth years phase down to 66. You can claim Social Security retirement benefits from age 62, but the benefit is reduced by roughly 30 percent compared to the FRA amount. Delaying past FRA, up to age 70, adds about 8 percent per year in delayed-retirement credits.
Pension-only retirees with a 401(k) or IRA can typically withdraw without penalty starting at age 59½. Public-safety workers and certain state pensions sometimes allow earlier retirement with full benefits. Your most reliable source is your Social Security statement at ssa.gov.
What to do with the time before retirement
- Plan the handover at work clearly. Three to six months out, sit down with your manager and document who takes over what. It makes the goodbye smoother and protects your reputation for the years after.
- Get your finances in order once and properly. Health insurance bridge between retirement and Medicare. Roth conversion windows. RMDs. Things that made sense during your career often need adjustment for retirement income.
- Prepare a new routine. The first Monday with no calendar can surprise you. One or two committed weekly anchors (gym, volunteer work, grandkids, a club) help with the transition.
- Book the trips and projects early. What you want to do at the start of retirement only happens if you set dates now.
